Basic Modern Paper Mâché Clay

What You'll Need

3 cups prepared paper pulp
1 cup white PVA glue
1 cup premixed joint compound
1 tablespoon vegetable oil or mineral oil
½ cup all-purpose flour

About the paper pulp

Use paper that has been soaked in water and blended until soft.
Squeeze out excess water before measuring.
The pulp should feel damp and cohesive, not wet and dripping.
Paper types vary considerably, so the final consistency may change depending on the paper you use. This is one reason different paper mâché clay recipes can behave differently even when the ingredient list looks similar.

How to Make It

1. Prepare the Pulp

Soak your paper until completely softened.

Blend it into a relatively fine pulp, then squeeze out excess water.

2. Combine the Ingredients

Place the pulp, PVA glue, joint compound, oil, and flour in a large bowl.

Mix until the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

3. Check the Consistency

The mixture should be soft enough to spread and shape, but firm enough to hold its form.

If it feels excessively wet, add a small amount of flour.

If it feels too dry or crumbly, add a small amount of PVA glue or water.

Make adjustments gradually.

4. Let It Rest

Allowing the mixture to rest for a short period can help the ingredients become more evenly distributed.

5. Apply in a Thin Layer

Apply the clay over a stable structure or form.

Avoid building a very thick layer all at once.

Allow the piece to dry thoroughly before adding additional material.
